University of Hargeisa Hosts Stakeholder Workshop to Revise MPH Curriculum

The Directorate of Research, Publications, and Community Services is pleased to announce that this week, as part of the Building Stronger Universities Project (BSU IV), Work Package 5, a significant workshop took place in Hargeisa, Somaliland. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including employers of Master of Public Health (MPH) graduates, current and former MPH students, as well as the Curriculum and Quality Assurance Directorate of the University of Hargeisa.

The primary focus of the workshop was to engage these key stakeholders in reviewing and providing valuable feedback on the MPH curriculum, specifically in the areas of epidemiology and nutrition. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that the updated MPH programme aligns with the latest global health knowledge, emerging trends, and best practices, while also being tailored to the unique context of Somaliland.

The updated curriculum will address pressing global health challenges and sustainability issues, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to meet the evolving needs of public health in the region. A key feature of the revised programme will be the introduction of a blended linear-modular curriculum model, alongside a focus on student-centered, competency and research-based learning methodologies.

The workshop was co-led by esteemed experts from Copenhagen University, Prof. Peter Furu and Prof. Bjørg Elvekjær, and facilitated by the Work Package 4 lead, A. Prof. Dr. Soheir Hassan Ahmed, Director of the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Hargeisa. The workshop took place from December 9th to 12th, 2024, at the Ambassadors Hotel in Hargeisa, Somaliland.

This workshop marks an important step in ensuring that the MPH programme at the University of Hargeisa remains relevant, responsive, and forward-thinking, preparing graduates to tackle the public health challenges at the population and global level.
