Abstract
Food insecurity remains a critical challenge for internally displaced populations in Somaliland. This study assessed the prevalence and determinants of food insecurity among households in Digaale, a camp for internally displaced persons in Hargeisa. A cross-sectional survey of 145 households was conducted using the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale, and binary logistic regression with robust standard errors was applied to analyse the data. The results show that 71.72 per cent of households were food insecure, indicating a severe and widespread problem. Regression analysis identified household size and market accessibility as significant determinants, while food assistance showed a positive association, reflecting the targeting of vulnerable households. Gender and resource access exhibited weaker associations, whereas other factors were not statistically significant. These findings highlight the importance of structural and economic constraints, particularly market access, in shaping food insecurity. Policy responses should focus on improving market access, strengthening livelihood opportunities, and maintaining well-targeted food assistance to enhance resilience in displacement settings. © 2026 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
