Masters Curriculum Co-Design Workshop: A Collaboration between the University of Hargeisa, University of Nairobi, and the Ministry of Health Development, Somaliland
A curriculum co-design workshop was held at Kyaka Hotel in Machakos, bringing together experts from the University of Hargeisa in the fields of Emergency, Trauma and Critical Care Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, and Midwifery. The workshop provided an important platform for collaborative input into the content and structure of three master’s degree programs, ensuring they are contextually relevant to the Somaliland health system while aligning with international standards for specialist training.
During the workshop, participants considered the unique healthcare needs of Somaliland and shared insights to shape curricula that are both practical and evidence-based. This collaborative effort resulted in draft versions of the following master’s programs:
- Master of Science in Emergency, Trauma, and Critical Care Nursing
- Master of Science in Pediatric Nursing
- Master of Science in Midwifery
These drafts will undergo further review and validation before implementation.
The University of Hargeisa is set to become the first institution in Somaliland to offer specialist postgraduate training for nurses and midwives. The programs are scheduled to launch in the 2025/2026 academic year, beginning in November 2025. This milestone marks a significant step forward in advancing the nursing and midwifery professions and improving health outcomes in Somaliland.
